Sathya Sai Speaks

April 26, 2025

If you read Driving Irresponsibly, thank you! You must be scratching your head about Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. He says, “I Am God” and then adds, “the only difference between me and you is I know Who I Am.” He says it is beyond the intellectual capacity for man to conceive of what He is. My largely-investigative sojourn at His ashram confirmed two important things: 1) He’s real (not a charlatan), and 2) He’s good. Now Sai Baba has stepped back behind the curtain where His Divine Form can no longer be perceived.

What should be our reaction to the Sai Phenomenon?

The answer is we should adopt ‘The Code.’ Sai Baba left us a treasure trove of specific, actionable wisdom during the 85 years He walked the Earth, codified in the book series Sathya Sai Speaks, The Vahini’s, and Summer Showers in Brindavan, among others. The appendix of my book, Driving Irresponsibly, is a gateway to begin to embrace ‘The Code,’ a path of living by a code of conduct outlined by God.

Sometime during the Gospel Story, Jesus said to His disciples, “You call me the Son of God yet you don’t do what I say.” Similarly and on many occasions, Sai Baba informed the mass of gathered devotees that we are coming to Prashanthi Nilayam for the wrong reasons. At times, including while I was there, Sai Baba declared, “I am not speaking any more at these meetings.” As for His many miraculous manifestations, He says, “I give you toys and trinkets so that you will want what I really came to give you.” Transformation of our nature above the animal, embody what Baba says it requires to truly be considered a human being long enough to eventually jump the chasm over to an identity that is your own Divine Self – not just in fleeting, drug-induced near-death experiences but as our constant integrated awareness. It is the Path of Return to our original innocence. Joy and peaceful contentedness increasingly become the norm. Ultimately, we cannot enjoy the fruits of the Spirit (our Divine Self) when we behave in ways that are beneath us, when we do things our Spirit would not do. Make ‘The Code’ your code of conduct.
